Hengki (b. Hengki Koentjoro, Semarang, 1963) is a Jakarta resident who went to Brooks Institute of Photography, California, where he majored in video production and minored in the fine art of photography, has spent quite long journey in exploring in what he loves the most; making pictures. “I’ve been in love with photography since I was 15 years old when my mother gave me a Kodak Pocket for my birthday. I just love images and photography fulfill that passion.”
For Hengki, photography is the medium where he can express himself with freedom. B&W, in particular, gives him more flexibility for personal interpretation. It is rich in mysteries and evokes stronger emotion. He is always inspired by what surrounds him, specifically nature, the moment he takes photographs, “Nature is my passion, she rarely let me down. Water in particular gives me deep inspiration within my soul. I try to spend as much time in nature as possible, this is the environment I feel comfortable with. The ocean is my favorite place to go, the huge open space is the main Inspiration for most of my works. The blue color has a special property to calm me down.”
The thing about Hengki’s photographs is that you can actually hear the sound of wave when you look at his ocean/underwater pictures, that you can hear the crowd of silence when you see his cityscape pictures, and you can actually feel like you are lost in the middle of a forest when you see his trees/nature scape pictures.
— And as we all know, those pictures are not even in color.
To name a few, Hengki has worked with Albin Michel Publication for Vendela Vida’s “Se Souvenir Des Jours Heureux” book cover, Sexto Piso Publication for Pascal Quignard’s “Butes” book cover, Geamala (Band) — also has been featured in DPWorld Magazine (Japan), Libertarian Mag (Argentina), Fotoblur (USA), Fubiz (France), JPG Mag (USA), Feature Shoot (USA), AulaFoto (Spain), Ignant (Germany), and many more.
He has been recognized in international awards, such as Asia Without Borders Photography Competition (Faces Of The Earth category, 2009) and PX3 Prix De La Fotografia Paris (Nature category, 2009) — and he also has attended “Urbantopia” collective exhibition (NAS Gallery, Jakarta, 2009).
